is a typical Spanish town with 85.000 inhabitants, there are a lot of residents and business people from all over Europe. Torrevieja developed from an unknown fishing village to the most visited destination at the southern end of the Costa Blanca. Because of the two huge salt lakes, which make Torrevieja the biggest salt contractor in Europe, the air has in particular much iodine. For a lot of people, who visit Spain concerned about their health, this plays a big role in the choice of their place of residence. Numerous clinics for heart-, circulation-and rheumatic illnesses are located in the area.
The balanced climate has made Torrevieja known as the fruit- and vegetable garden on the Costa Blanca. Tomatoes can be gathered in 4 times a year, to say nothing of the different types of melons, olives, almonds, grapes, cotton, artichokes, lemons and oranges. Torrevieja has an extra charm because of its possibilities for excursiones. Famous are Cartagena with its navel port, Orihuela with its 33 churches, Murcia, the peninsula La Manga, Mar Menor, Alicante, the capital of the province, Europe‘s biggest palm garden in Elche and the island of Tabarca. There is a speciality mineral spring in the curative baths of Fortuna, where water always has a temperature of 35 degrees. The trip to Fortuna through the idyllic countryside lasts about 1 hour.
Also interesting is the daily fish market in Torrevieja, where the natives and tourists buy their fish, crustacean, meat, poultry, fruits, vegetables and flowers. Every Friday there is a street market, which offers shoes, clothes, jewellery and economy goods. Sports people have a large choice, too. There is a royal port and the new yacht harbour, Marina International, in the centre of Torrevieja, schools for surfing, a motor boat hire service with waterskiing, 3 international golf links, diving schools, fishing, tennis club, several riding clubs, Go Karts, bowling and minigolf and also a flying school for sports planes.
Of course there is the permanent growing choice in cafés, boutiqes, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and discos. Torrevieja becomes more & more a metropolis of Spanish tourism.
